The latest title in the surprisingly long history of Lord of the Rings games is nearly here. The Lord of the Rings: Gollum focuses on the titular and ring obsessed character Gollum, and his quest to find and acquire his lost precious. The game allows players to explore Middle Earth in a much more subtle and sneaky way as opposed to outright combat. The title is expected to release on May 25 across most platforms, save for the Nintendo Switch, though it is expected that an announcement for that port will be coming soon.
The game will release with two versions: a standard edition and an aptly named previous edition. The latter includes bits like a lore compendium and authentic elvish voice acting for the elvish characters. Beyond this, there is also a pre-order bonus that features several emotes for Gollum for players to use. The game is already available for pre-order on sites like Amazon.
Previous titles like Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War and their famed nemesis system helped set the bar for what a Lord of the Rings title could be. With Gollum being the biggest Lord of the Rings release in recent years, it has some pretty big shoes to fill.
However, the most interesting aspect of Gollum and arguably its biggest selling point is that, unlike many of the Lord of the Rings games, Gollum is a pure stealth title. A stealth title set in Middle Earth offers up a wide variety of opportunities for Gollum and how the game will pan out. We will just have to see if developers Daedalic Entertainment and publisher Nacon take advantage of this in a positive way.
