Sega is Attempting to Acquire ‘Angry Birds’ Developer

An acquisition deal between video game companies Sega and Rovio is reportedly close to finalizing. Sega’s offer of $1 billion has caught the interest of the mobile game giant responsible for the highly successful Angry Birds franchise. Assuming nothing goes wrong, we could see the deal finalized by the end of next week.

Why Sega is seeking out Rovio

Rovio has largely been outside of the gaming news cycle for several years now, the last time being with the release of the Angry Birds 2 movie. This is also not the first time that the company has been sought after of late, with Israeli mobile game company Playtika having attempted to buy the Angry Birds developers for $800 million.

Still, Sega’s attempts seem to be having a much greater result for them than Playtika’s attempts. With the company already having a list of acquisitions, including Relic Entertainment, the studio that develops the Company of Heroes franchise, and Altus, the developers of the Persona series of titles.

Rovio would be the Sonic studio’s biggest acquisition in recent years. Just what Sega would do with Rovio is up in the air. Maybe a new Angry Birds title, perhaps? Regardless, assuming everything goes according to plan, the two will be tied together.

A Burst of Acquisitions

Sega’s desire to acquire Rovio is just one in a growing trend of acquisitions within the video game industry recently. With Microsoft’s fight to acquire Activision-Blizzard, Sony’s buyout of Bungie, and others popping up in the headlines, Sega and Rovio are just ones among many in this apparent frenzy of acquisitions.

If or when this acquisition goes through, a whole world of opportunities will be open to the pair of video game companies.
