Amazon Goes All in on Remakes and Reboots
It’s still remake and reboot season in Hollywood as Amazon unveils its plans regarding a whole host of movies and TV shows, all specifically from MGM Studios, which was bought out by Amazon back in March of 2022 for $8.5 billion.
What’s on Amazon’s List?
Amazon’s list includes shows and movies from all sorts of genres, including Stargate, Robocop, Barbershop, Legally Blonde, The Magnificent Seven, and Pink Panther. Some, like Robocop, have already been rebooted in previous years, though said reboots have often been poor imitations of the originals.
There is also talk of other films and movies being remade by Amazon and MGM, including a new Poltergeist movie. However, for most of these ideas and plans, almost nothing is set in stone. All it is right now is just words and speculation.
Amazon is trying to expand it’s catalogue of media via MGM — both the material they have now and with future projects. Amazon is obviously interested in this expansion, but have only been able to start talking about them now due to having to clear up legal challenges regarding the MGM and Amazon merger beforehand.
Do we Really Need More Nostalgia?
This trend of redoing everything has been popular in Hollywood for years now. While originality still has its place in the studio and writing room, it has been increasingly sidelined in favor of this method of storytelling.
While it doesn’t seem like this desire to capture nostalgia will be ending any time soon, hopefully the studios will realize that there is a great many people who would prefer something new, as opposed to another half-hearted remake or reboot.
