The New York Knicks hired Steve Mills to become the executive vice president and general manager of the organization in 2013. Today, Mills has been canned by the Knicks. After many years of losing and getting nowhere, Mills finally lost his job. It appears that GM Scott Perry is staying in his role and will be running the team. With the Knicks suffering another bad season sitting at 15-36, the team decided to go ahead and can Mills.
Adrian Wojnarowski was the first to report the news:
The Knicks can’t part ways with their owner so they fired Mills. Woj continued his reporting saying that the Knicks plan is to go heavy after Masai Ujiri. Will Masai take the job? If Ujiri is smart he will stay very far away. For now, Scott will run the show. Ujiri is under contract through the 2021-2022 season in Toronto.
It felt like Mills was on the hot seat the second that David Fizdale got fired. The Knicks offseason went from Zion, KD, and Kyrie to Julius Randle, Marcus Morris, and RJ Barrett. Add in Bobby Portis, Elfrid Payton, and Taj Gibson for shits and giggles just to spend their cap space for no reason. The second that happened, Mill was always going to get fired.
The Knicks have been an unmitigated disaster since Mills took over. Since 2013-2014, the Knicks haven’t won more than 37 games in a season. The franchise is 178-365 during Mills’ run with the team which is the worst record in the NBA. They have also run through 7 coaches during Mills’ tenure. The guy clearly didn’t know what he was doing. I think that’s safe to say.
