The College Football Playoff Is Officially Expanding
Since its inception in 2014, fans all over have clamored for an expanded playoff. The current format has not been changed since it began, with a committee voting on the top-four teams to enter the College Football Playoff for a chance to play for a National Championship. Well, fans got their wish. According to Pete Thamel, the CFB Board of Managers voted on the matter today, deciding to officially expand the College Football Playoff.
There is little information out right now, but according to Thamel, the new 12-team model is expected to begin in 2026. However, there are many things to be worked out in this as a contract has to be drawn up and signed, which means there is a chance we could see the expanded playoff come earlier than 26′. The vote appears to have been a unanimous decision, according to Nicole Auerbach of The Athletic.
This decision to jump straight to 12 teams feels like a dramatic one. Rumblings of the desire to expand the College Football Playoff by fans had the expansion first starting with somewhere like 6 teams or even 8. But I don’t mind the jump straight up to 12. It gives even more meaning to these bigger bowl games and they will feel like a big deal again. Some bigger bowls just haven’t felt the same since the move to the Playoff, this should fix that.
The decision to expand the College Football Playoff should and likely will be taken well by everyone involved. More teams will get a chance at the dance, which means those big games throughout the regular season just got even bigger, and conference championships will mean even more. I can’t wait to see how this all plays out in the future.
