The Texas Longhorns are very much alive in the 2024-25 College Football playoff but Johntay Cook won’t be part of the equation to potentially win a National Title. The calendar in this sport is so screwed up but that’s a story for another day. The talented wide receiver has entered the transfer portal and has picked Washington as his next landing spot.
247 Sports beat reporter Mike Roach was the first to report the news:
Cook, a former five-star recruit during the 2023 cycle, has two seasons of eligibility remaining after spending the last two years at Texas. During the 2024 campaign, Cook tallied eight receptions for 137 yards and two touchdowns. He posted an eerily similar stat line as a freshman notching eight catches for 136 yards.
The truth of the matter is, the Texas wide receiver room is so damn loaded. At the end of the day, he just couldn’t pass the other guys on the depth chart such as Matthew Golden, Isaiah Bond, Silas Bolden, etc.
Cook is a 6-foot, 185 pound speedster who can stretch the field. That’s his game. Winning those deep explosive routes. We just haven’t really seen it to this point. At Washington, he should get plenty of opportunity to live up to his old recruiting ranking. If Cook were another version of Xavier Worthy, I think we would have seen it by now but that doesn’t mean he can’t carve out a future at his next landing spot. Time will tell how this new landing spot works for Cook. The good news is, Jed Fisch has a track record of winning and is a former respected assistant of Bill Belichick.
