Amidst the rumors of a “PlayStation 5 Pro” (PS5 Pro) releasing in 2023, the latest news informant is not a journalist or gaming insider. It’s an entire company.
TCL Technologies, the Chinese electronics company, sent their company representative to a European tech conference. Their agenda? Present the latest line of TCL television sets. The verdict? The TVs look great. Very high-quality. But it was the contextual info in-between presentation slides about television sets that caught journalists off-guard: details about the rumored PlayStation 5 Pro and a new Xbox Series X/S. Details about the next-generation of gaming consoles. Or “mid-gen upgrades”, to be more specific. A 9.5 generation for Sony, Microsoft, and the larger gaming community.
The information piqued the interest of one gaming journalist among the crowd, Maciej Zabłocki from the Poland-based “PPE”. Mr. Zablocki provided an insider report and these first-hand photos of the TCL presentation.
8k consoles with the computing power of a RX 7700 XT? The consensus from tech junkies is that this upgrade can be achieved by TLC’s estimated release date of 2023/24. So this information provided by TLC is not entirely implausible. However, it’s the current factors surrounding both the PS5 and Xbox Series X in the marketplace that make fans skeptical.
Many question the release window of 2023/24 for mid-gen consoles. While tech upgrades are not unheard of for base consoles, fans are quick to point out the problem of supply shortages still plaguing Sony, Microsoft, and the larger gaming industry. Two years after the 9th generation’s launch date both consoles are still infamously scarce. The global pandemic has crippled production in all sectors and tech manufacturing is no exception. The demand for the new consoles outstrips its supply by a mile, much to the frustration of consumers.
So, from a business perspective, it seems unfeasible for either company to release new products when current generations remain so high in demand. The mid-gen promises of the TCL conferences are within reach, but is it worth the extension?
This presentation from TCL could be nothing more than a prediction. An attempt to stay ahead of the technological curve, the industry’s infamous unpredictability. Or, maybe, just maybe, TCL really does have the holy grail of insider information.
