Team USA Finalizes 11 of 12 Roster Spots For 2024 Olympics
We are roughly two-and-a-half months away from the start of the 2024 Paris Olympics. Seven players were deemed “locks” in late February–including the NBA’s all-time leading scorer in LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Stephen Curry, who has never partaken in the Olympics before.
Though according to ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski, 11 of the 12 roster spots have essentially been finalized.
Here are those 11 players:
- Bam Adebayo, Heat
- Devin Booker, Suns
- Stephen Curry, Warriors
- Anthony Davis, Lakers
- Kevin Durant, Suns
- Anthony Edwards, Timberwolves
- Joel Embiid, 76ers
- Tyrese Haliburton, Pacers
- Jrue Holiday, Celtics
- LeBron James, Lakers
- Jayson Tatum, Celtics
Every single player on the list outside of Holiday was dubbed All-Stars this season. Though Holiday is one of the NBA’s best two-way guards and was crucial to Team USA’s success in the 2021 Olympics.
“Team officials have valued Holiday’s two-way ability, point-of-attack defense and dynamic playmaking,” Charania wrote in late Feb. “Holiday was considered Team USA’s second-most important player behind Durant at the Tokyo Games in 2021.”
Outside of Holiday, among the holdovers from the 2021 Olympics are Adebayo, Booker, Tatum and Durant, who is partaking in his fourth consecutive Olympics. Durant, 35, has averaged 20.6 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.3 steals across 27.7 minutes per game in those four Olympic runs, shooting 53.8 percent from the floor and 48.8 percent from 3-point range on 6.6 attempts (50.1 3-point rate).
James has not played in the Olympics since 2012, when he averaged 13.3 points, 5.6 rebounds and 5.6 assists alongside Durant and Carmelo Anthony, one of the greatest Team USA players ever. The Laker superstar has aged like fine wine, but I’m interested to see how the 39-year-old delegates alongside some of the league’s best young stars–in addition to Curry and Durant.
There are no subsequent reports about who could be competing for the final spot, assuming they elect to use it. If they do, here are a few names to consider based on Team USA’s initial player pool: Jalen Brunson, Paul George and Kyrie Irving, among others.
