Rumor: This Team Tried To Trade For #1 Pick In 2020 Draft, Pick Joe Burrow

Going into the 2020 NFL Draft, there were rumors swirling on who would be the first overall pick, and who would be taking that player. As it turns out, Cincinnati stayed put and took Joe Burrow with the first overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft. But today we found out per Ian Rapoport, the Miami Dolphins made a strong effort to move up and take Burrow.

The Dolphins were forced to stay where they picked at 5, the first of their three first-round picks in that draft, and ended up taking a Quarterback still in Tua Tagovailoa. It is worth noting, however, that with the very next pick, the Los Angeles Chargers selected Justin Herbert out of Oregon. Rapoport did go into detail on what the framework would have had to look like to make a deal of this magnitude happen.

Full quote via nesn.com:

“What would the price have been? Sources say Miami was willing to trade all three No. 1 picks it had in 2020 — including the No. 5 pick that wound up being Tua Tagovailoa — and potentially more,” Rapoport wrote for NFL.com. “There was not a consensus on what it would take, just that Miami wanted to try. The Bengals made sure it wasn’t a thing.

“Owner Stephen Ross was among the voices pushing hardest for the trade, according to sources. In the end, the Bengals never considered it. They selected Burrow, and the rest will live in Bengals history.”

Tua Tagovalioa has had a little bit of a rough go during his tenure in Miami, to say the least. The media has always ridden Tua very hard since he came into the league, and even with a winning record in the NFL, I don’t see that changing. Meanwhile, Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals just clinched their first AFC Championship berth since 1989. It will be interesting to see how their careers are intertwined, especially after this news came out.
