Tea Leaves Suggest The Angels Could Finally Trade Mike Trout

Tea Leaves Suggest The Angels Could Finally Trade Mike Trout

I could not fathom being an Angels fan right now. Five years ago I wrote a post detailing why the Angels should trade Mike Trout. Five years later the Angels still haven’t won a single playoff game and Trout’s value as a player has plummeted. Mostly because of age and injuries. This team is so screwed and it has everything to do with this franchise continuing to lie to themselves over and over again.

As the 2023 MLB offseason is rapidly approaching, it sure sounds like the Angels rebuild that we needed several years ago is finally about to happen. Nobody thinks Shohei Ohtani is sticking around to rot in this clown show, right?

Bob Nightengale has reported that if Trout wants to leave, the Angels may oblige.

“The Los Angeles Angels, perhaps for the first time, are open to trading All-Star outfielder Mike Trout if he indicates to them that he wants out. Trout has exclusive no-trade rights and said recently that he wants to have a private conversation with the front office and ownership about their direction.”

“However, Trout, 32, would not generate the same trade return as in the past. He has not played more than 140 games since 2016, and will have missed 249 games the past three years if he doesn’t return this season.”

“He still has $248.15 million owed to him the next seven years.”

Take this with a grain of salt because it came from Bob Nightengale and we all know he’s a liar. However, the tea leaves do make some sense on this one. Why would Trout want to be part of this? If Ohtani leaves, he should absolutely go to management and ask out. He also should have done so years ago and or hit the open market as a free agent.

The crazy thing is, the Angels will probably have to eat some of this money if they want a good return. Trout is still an awesome player but the injury stuff makes it a really proposition to just take this kind of contract on. You’re getting the worst portion of the deal.
