Tampa Trades Willy Adames To Milwaukee
The door is officially open for Wander Franco. The Tampa Bay Rays have made a big trade which should consequentially clear a pathway for Franco to join the MLB team. Tampa has traded Willy Adames and Trevor Richards to Milwaukee for J.P. Feyereisen and Drew Rasmussen.
Jeff Passan of ESPN was the first to report the news:
The Rays are loaded at the shortstop position. Both Vidal Brujan and Taylor Walls are top-100 prospects in the system. It turns out, the Rays are going to call up Walls first over Franco. Likely to save some of that service time on Franco so that they gain an extra year of control before he becomes a free agent.
On the surface, this trade feels like Tampa really sold low here on Adames. Remember, Adames was the big piece the Rays got back in the David Price trade. Sure, Adames’ bat comes and goes but he’s a really slick glove at short. Milwaukee adds another great defender to go with Kolten Wong, Jackie Bradley, and Lorenzo Cain.
Adames is hitting just .197 on the season but Milwaukee also adds Trevor Richards in the trade who can slot into a rotation spot. It makes the return from the Tampa perspective a bit weird. J.P. Feyereisen and Drew Rasmussen are both unestablished relievers who are mostly unproven at the MLB level.
It will be curious to see how this trade impacts playoff races. Tampa appears to have taken a step back from their World Series run a year ago.
