‘Stay’ is the new collaboration from The Kid LAROI and Justin Bieber. It’s a certified bop, so much so that Alex Chick submitted it to the first edition of the Vendetta Vibe Playlist. This is the second collaboration between the two artists after ‘Unstable’ made it to Bieber’s latest album Justice with a LAROI feature. ‘Stay’ is undoubtedly one of the songs of the summer, but will it survive beyond that?
Charlie Puth led the production for this track, and he absolutely killed it. The backing track features a really nice, bouncy synth that is reminiscent of a-ha’s ‘Take on Me’ in a way. It’s easy on the ears and the vocal quality is solid as well.
‘Stay’ had been teased for months after snippets were leaked onto radio shows by LAROI. The Bieber collaboration was a later development, and there was speculation that Juice WRLD might have found his way onto the track. Features aside, everyone was already excited for the song before any guest was announced. From the teasers that were released, it seemed like the new track had the potential to be one of The Kid LAROI’s best to date. Much of that was due to Puth’s production.
I’ve already said that this song is a bop, so it’s not really a question of whether I like it or not. Looking at it critically, I don’t know that the production value is enough to propel this song onto the airwaves beyond the summer. Lyrically, it’s pretty ho hum. Both The Kid LAROI and Justin Bieber have much better songs as far as lyrics are concerned, including their first team-up on ‘Unstable.’ Also, it’s really repetitive for a song that is barely over two minutes long. I was honestly sort of disappointed after hearing the initial 30-second snippet of the song and then finding out that the whole song was basically that snippet on loop four times.
I don’t know that ‘Stay’ is built to be anything more than a summertime flash in the pan. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, especially since I suspect that was the intention of the song in the first place. While more effort would have been nice, especially with such great production, I won’t say that the song is awful. It’s just that both artists have much better songs in their recent catalogs. ‘Stay’ will almost certainly find its way onto The Kid LAROI’s next full album.
