Spencer Burford Proves My Method For Scouting Offensive Linemen Works

I can promise you I watched zero games of UTSA college football last year. I was high on offensive linemen Spencer Burford anyway simply because he showed traits that would translate to the NFL level. It’s only been one Week in the 2022 NFL season but the case may already be closed on Burford. He’s damn good.

Outside of Trent Williams, the 49ers offensive line has major question marks. The rookie Burford more than held his own in his NFL debut. Burford basically didn’t lose a rep.

Some pass block win rate numbers for #49ers OL yesterday:

G Spencer Burford — 96.2% (15th best among guards)
G Aaron Banks — 80.8% (55th of 61 guards)
C Jake Brendel — 92% (20th of 30 centers)
T Trent Williams — 88.5% (36th of 61 tackles)
T Mike McGlinchey — 84.6% (41st)

Who knows what the future holds for Burford. Judging a rookie off one game is probably a silly concept. However, I think it is also fair to say that this Burford can play. Some of this stuff is very American Idol. You know who can sing and it doesn’t take very long. Burford can play. That guy is going to make it, at minimum.

I know what you’re thinking… Trey… how did you know Burford would be good if you watched zero games of UTSA football? Jokes on you. I know what my eyes tell me and they’re right way more than anybody else when it comes to this scouting stuff.

I had notes on Burford from the combine and Senior Bowl. The knees always tell the story. I don’t need to watch game tape on offensive linemen. I don’t have the time, nor do I have the luxury. The knees ALWAYS tell the story.

If you go through my old notes on offensive linemen, it’s actually scary how accurate I am. We’re working with at least a 97% hit rate. It’s all from watching the way they bend their knees. It’s why I continue to be the best. I see things you don’t and I put on clinics in this draft community every day. I just want my respect.
