It Sounds Like The Red Sox Are VERY High On Enmanuel Valdez

The message of trading your starting catcher while trying to claim you’re trying to win baseball games didn’t sit with any Red Sox fan. Ultimately, if the Christian Vazquez trade fails, it’s because the crown jewel of that trade (Enmanuel Valdez) failed. If you ask one Red Sox front office member, Boston appears to be VERY high on Valdez’s potential.

Red Sox director of player development Brian Abraham had a lot of things to say in a recent post by The Athletic. It’s a pretty good read. Abraham speaks about a bunch of notable prospects in the Boston farm system.

VIA The Athletic:

“If he were going to get played up tomorrow, I think his ability to play those positions would be very valuable for a Major League clubhouse and a Major League bench. He can play infield. He can play a corner (outfield) spot. And he can run into baseballs with power. So, I think the skillset lends itself really well to being an impactful Major League player. We’ve seen athleticism, and we’ve seen some areas that can be improved upon. I know our Triple-A staff already feel they’ve made some strides ins some of the smaller motor learning skills that he can improve upon while being in the infield, whether that be first-step quickness or the way he moves from left to right. And same thing in the outfield, some of the first step and quickness, I think he’s shown improvement on.

But, I think we’ve got a twitchy guy who has power, who drives the baseball, and the better he’s able to have an understanding of the strike zone and what he needs to do to consistently drive the baseball to all fields will allow him to be more impactful. But I think in a lot of ways he’s someone who’s incredibly unique, who can do all of those things (that profile well as a utility man) and still be someone who can play one position and play there for a consistent amount of time. I think that’s incredibly valuable these days. As we know, our Major League team has a bunch of those guys, our Triple-A team has a bunch of those guys. Getting yourself in the lineup to make an impact is really important.”

We already know the Red Sox aren’t playing their best full-man roster so we don’t even have to get into that whole topic. All I’m going to say is the Red Sox better be right about this one because Chaim Bloom is running out of excuses.

Since the trade, Valdez is hitting just .202. However, over the full season across AA and AAA, Valdez sports a .299 average with an OPS of .943. It sounds like Valdez has work to do defensively but they believe in his bat. There have been moments during the minor league season where Valdez’s power has stood out.

I was not happy when the Red Sox traded Christian Vazquez for two guys that may or may not make the team.

Wilyer Abreu was the other player included in the Vazquez trade. Abreu is hitting .222 with one home run in 25 games for the AA team in Portland. The only positive is that Reese McGuire has played well since being traded to Boston.
