Sony Michel Retires From The NFL

When Sony Michel signed a deal to return to the Rams this year, I was shocked. Mostly because he’s been a bad player for years now. That didn’t used to be the case but it was obvious that his knees were shot at this stage of his career. To the surprise of no one that has been paying attention, Michel finally called it quits and will be retiring from the NFL.

Sean McVay spoke to reporters and was actually the first to let the cat out of the bag.

VIA ESPN:

“the epitome of a pro” and “a hugely instrumental piece” for the Rams’ 2021 title team.

“What an incredible player. What a great career this guy has had,” McVay said.

He added: “It’s a bummer. His body’s feeling like it’s talking to him, and I have nothing but respect and appreciation for the competitor that he is and love Sony.”

Michel, 28, spent last season as backup with the Chargers and was pretty terrible every time he touched the ball. The former Georgia product averaged 2.9 yards per carry on 36 attempts.

This year, Michel tried to latch on with the Rams but clearly was going to get beat out by younger options. Cam Akers is going to be the starter. Kyren Williams, Zach Evans, and Ronnie Rivers are going to occupy the backup spots.

Michel’s knees have been a ticking time bomb dating back to his Georgia days. It’s no surprise that he’s aged out of the league quickly.

Still, Michel will go down as a two-time Super Bowl champion picking up one with the Patriots and Rams. Michel’s college running mate Nick Chubb is probably the best back in the league. Michel was actually picked ahead of Chubb during that same draft class. Probably one the Patriots want back.
