Smael Mondon Jr 2025 NFL Draft Profile

No need to bury the lede here. I love Smael Mondon and you will too after you read this. Let’s get right into the 2025 NFL Draft profile for the Georgia linebacker because I have some thoughts!

NFL Draft Stock Report: Week 1Week 5Week 12Week 14Conference ChampionshipsSugar Bowl, Senior Bowl (3), Game

Mondon, 22, was a five star recruit hailing from Dallas, Georgia. During the 2021 cycle, Mondon was the 21st ranked overall player in the country, second overall linebacker, and fourth ranked player in the state. The Dawgs Senior linebacker spent every season in Athens.

Let’s start here. I’d argue there is no deeper position group in the country than what Georgia has at linebacker. Jalon Walker was basically an edge rusher because they didn’t need him at linebacker (profile). The fact that Mondon even kept his job based on the talent they keep bringing in is insane. Guys like Jamon Dumas-Johnson and Xavian Sorey couldn’t even make the team and will get drafted this year. Add CJ Allen to your list next year and we’ll keep it moving.

Checking in at 6-foot-2, 224, Mondon is a prototypical modern linebacker. He brings plus speed and range all over the field. He was also a three year starter for Georgia leading the team in tackles as a sophomore. I’m pretty positive the only reason people aren’t higher on him is because he suffered some nagging injuries the last two years. The same reason people are too low on Mykel Williams right now (profile). Over the last two years, Mondon has six sacks too while being an undersized speed linebacker.

It wasn’t perfect at the Combine, but you can see why this is a former five star guy. I thought it was a really nice showing at the Senior Bowl too. More importantly, this guy can really cover. He’s a real problem in man coverage and will make plays on the ball at the next level. Has bowling ball of hell vibes coming down hill too. He may be undersized but he’s not weak either. Three missed tackles all year in 2024 while playing in the heart of the SEC.

A lot of the data tracks here. Mondon notched 60 pressures over the last three years while being a standup linebacker and rarely being asked to blitz. Mondon allowed just 6.7 yards per reception this past year never giving up big plays when being asked to cover. He’s played special teams at a younger age for Georgia at a high level. Do people get how hard it is to start as a sophomore for this team?

I absolutely love this player. I legitimately believe Smael Mondon is a round one player. He has all the tools to become a blue chip middle linebacker with plus speed and range. He’s just one of those guys for me, I gotta leave the draft with who will cost a fraction of the price of what he should. If teams aren’t smart enough to figure out the Georgia guys on defense are a different breed by now, they can’t be helped.
