Nostalgia is a powerful thing. Many of us want to go back to simpler times when we didn’t have to worry about bills, buy food, or any of the other crap that comes with adulthood. During the past few years or so, old SlamBall highlights would pop up on my feed. Many, like myself, grew up watching SlamBall and loving the physicality and insane dunks. Well, for the first time since the Obama administration, we have new Slamball.
The dunks are glorious. The physicality is something that could make LeBron James cry just thinking about it. It’s a great shakeup from what we are used to seeing on the basketball court. I only caught parts of the game last night, but I will absolutely be catching the next set of games.
SlamBall is a perfect alternative to the NBA during the offseason. This is one area I think basketball culture is ahead of when it comes to alternative versions of pro sports. Ice Cube’s 3v3 league Big3 seems to be doing well and has stayed in the positive for six years. The format for Big3 is fun and, like SlamBall, can be nostalgic by getting to see some of the hoopers we watched growing up keep playing.
However, I can’t say the same for football. Arena Football is finally making a comeback, which was always fun to watch. The alternate USFL and XFL can be fun but I don’t know if they can be sustained. One alternate football league, the Alliance of American Football, went under before its first season ended (a collapse I got to witness in real-time).
The world is a better place with SlamBall. I remember growing up and playing a backyard version of SlamBall with my friends. The nostalgia factor alone makes SlamBall worth the price of entry, but it is also great entertainment.
