SimBull 2021 CFB Full Team Breakdown: Maryland Terrapins

Welcome to Vendetta’s SimBull CFB full team breakdowns, where the writers from Vendetta Sports Media will be analyzing all the Power 5 college football programs for their share value on SimBull. This edition looks at the Maryland Terrapins.

2020 Record: 2-3 (2-3 Big Ten)

2021 Projected Win Total (via William Hill Sportsbook): O/U 6 Wins

On the Field

Since joining the Big Ten in 2014, the Maryland Terrapins have never had a winning record in the conference. Their future started to look much more promising after current head coach Mike Locksley returned to College Park in 2019 following a successful stint as the offensive coordinator at Alabama. Locksley is a recruiting guru who has brought the Terrapins three of the top 10 recruits in program history within the last two years.

Outside of the Crimson Tide, Maryland could be considered Wide Receiver U after producing NFL players Stefon Diggs and DJ Moore while having a very solid core this season of Rakim Jarrett, Dontay Demus, and Marcus Fleming. Having Taulia Tagovailoa under center doesn’t hurt things either. The Terps stand to have a dynamic offense this season, which will keep them competitive in a lot of games. A win at Illinois would give them their first 3-0 start since 2016.

The Big Ten is a tough conference, but Maryland could very well hit the over for their win total with the team they currently have. The matchups against Illinois and Kent State set them up for a 4-0 start, after which they would need to go just 3-5 to exceed their six-win projection.

In the Market

I previously labeled the Terps as the best buy in the Big Ten before the season started. They currently have a share price of $34.94. This ranks 44th of the 65 Power Five teams, and ninth of the 14 Big Ten teams. There is certainly value to be found here. Maryland will have the opportunity to increase this price with games against Ohio State, Iowa, Penn State, and Michigan on the schedule. Given how they have played thus far, an increase in share price seems almost inevitable. Even if they fail to capitalize on their scheduled opportunities, Maryland may still be a good hold for the future. Coach Locksley has attracted big-time recruits ever since he started at UMD, and success should follow if he continues to do so.
