Should The NHL Consider A Midseason Tournament?
The NHL will not follow suit with the talk of an in-season tournament. It’s already been reported that the league is not considering that type of move. However, are we sure that’s the right call? Should the NHL actually consider a midseason tournament?
The short answer is no. What the NBA is doing with this midseason tournament is a total charade. It somehow counts towards the regular season but also doesn’t but also does? It’s a jumbled mess that appears to be a total experiment by the league to try to counteract how boring the regular season is.
The NHL regular season isn’t boring. In fact, the only thing the league really needs to implement is the equivalent of a red zone channel. That right there would do wonders for the league and really would grow the audience. I’m sure the league won’t listen to me despite the fact that they stink at marketing their sport.
Replicating the midseason tournament is a bad idea. BUT… having a midseason tournament that looks nothing like the regular season is absolutely something the NHL should consider. Three-on-three overtime is one of the greatest things the league has going for it. Could you design a midseason tournament where the top prospects in the league compete in a three-on-three type of setting where the winners get a prize? Maybe it’s for better draft position by having the right prospects in-house? We’re just spitballing here but there are tons of ideas the league could do with that type of format.
If the NHL ever does a midseason tournament, three-on-three is the way to go. Figure out the rest of the details and go from there. If the NHL does that, it will certainly help the sport. Otherwise, there is no reason to replicate the NBA with a tournament in the middle of the season that accomplishes nothing.
