NHL will not add In-Season Tournament

After the NBA added its brand new in-season tournament, the NHL seems to be fading off a different path. The National Hockey League will not be considering an in-season tournament in the future.

Deputy Commissioner of the NHL Bill Daly responded to the NBA, adding that the in-season tournament will not be considered by the NHL. Marty Walsh, the NHL Players’ Association executive director, told ESPN his opinions on the situation.

“I think it’s worth looking at anything that’s out there,” Walsh said. “I tell players all the time, even if you have an idea that you think is kind of off-the-wall a little bit, just run it by me. You never know what turns into a brilliant idea.”

The NBA implemented the in-season tournament in the new CBA, revealing the format during NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, Nev., earlier this month.

These new tournament games will count towards the overall record of a team during the season and leading up to the championship game, the only game that will not count towards their regular season record.

With the addition of the tournament, the NBA introduced the NBA Cup, awarded to the team who wins the tournament. Players will also be rewarded for this tournament, with each player on the winning team will earn $500,000.

Frankly, the National Hockey League has no business in adding an in-season tournament in an already long and grueling season. The NHL has no problem with players sitting out of games or with load management problems like the NBA. Just because one league adds something doesn’t mean you have to as well. Keep the league how it already is.
