The Clippers almost traded for Malcolm Brogdon. That was before the first iteration of the Kristaps Porzingis deal blew up. Now that Brogdon is finally out of Boston after the Jrue Holiday trade, should the Clippers revisit adding Brogdon?
The Clippers are all in. We know this. They’re going to run this Paul George/Kawhi Leonard thing back again. We also know this team isn’t good enough as currently constructed. If the Clippers want to have any prayer at competing, they need to find a way to cash in Marcus Morris, Nic Batum, and or Robert Covington for a piece that can help them win. Dumping the bad Morris deal for Brogdon is certainly something the Clippers need to consider.
At the same token, are we sure Brogdon is the missing piece? I’m not sure point guard needs to be the place to look for upgrades. Terance Mann is really good and deserves playing time. The Clippers also traded for Bones Hyland. You would have to think they want him to play. The Clips also brought back Russell Westbrook. Is there even room for Brogdon?
Also, Brogdon is always hurt. Is adding an injury prone player really the best idea on a team that’s always banged up? The former Virginia product is coming off a season where he played 67 games. That’s the second most games he’s played in a season during his seven year career. The season prior, Brogdon played in just 36 games. We already know Kawhi (who just spoke out against the rest policy rules) is always hurt. The Clips team needs guys who are reliable from a health standpoint.
At the end of the day, I understand why the Clippers would be interested, but I would pass. Brogdon got hurt at the worst time of the year for the Celtics last year and his overall game is slipping. He’s not just hurt all the time. He’s aging poorly and heading into his 30’s. Brogdon’s defense slipped bad last year with the Celtics. The Clippers should probably look elsewhere to upgrade their team. At least, I would be looking elsewhere.
