The Senators Are Trying To Dump Erik Brännström?

The Senators skated a man down in their opening-night loss to the Carolina Hurricanes. Ottawa is in a serious cap crunch right now and they’re trying to work their way out of it. It’s their own fault they’re in this mess, but that’s a story for another day. It turns out that the Sens have identified their sacrificial lamb in order to open up cap space. Erik Brännström has entered the chat.

Brännström joins Mathieu Joseph on the list of candidates Ottawa is trying to move to open cap space.

“(Dorion) is trying to move Mathieu Joseph. He has had (conversations) about moving Erik Brannstrom,” TSN’s Darren Dreger reported on Thursday’s edition of “Insider Trading.”

Ottawa really needs to open cap space up to sign Shane Pinto. Josh Norris could be placed on LTIR but it doesn’t sound like anybody knows what’s going on with his shoulder problems. Of course, nobody forced Ottawa to give Vladimir Tarasenko money this offseason or take back Dominik Kubalik in the Alex DeBrincat trade. Those two things are what ate up the cap space in Ottawa.

Brännström, 24, was the main piece in the Mark Stone trade. It’s safe to say that deal hasn’t worked out for the Sens. Brännström posted 18 points in 74 contests last season and carries a $2 million AAV. Brännström was Vegas’ first round pick in the 2017 NHL Draft. He certainly hasn’t played like a first round pick thus far in his brief career.
