Seattle Seahawks 2019 NFL Training Camp Preview

Seattle Seahawks
With Doug Baldwin gone, can Tyler Lockett become a true number one receiver? It’s time to check out the Seattle Seahawks 2019 NFL Training Camp Preview! (Sy Bean / The Seattle Times)

Russell Wilson carries the Seattle Seahawks. I don’t think there is another way to put it. Whether it’s the lack of talent on offense, defense, or play calling, Russell Wilson has next to nothing to work with. His receivers stink, his offensive line is dreadful, and Brian Schottenheimer calls plays like a scared chicken. Still, Wilson carried this team to the playoffs. Heading into 2019, can Wilson do it again? Let’s take a look at the Seattle Seahawks 2019 NFL Training Camp Preview!

3 Position Battles To Watch:

Wide Receiver: Tyler Lockett, DK Metcalf, Jaron Brown, David Moore, Amara Darboh, Jazzy Ferguson, Gary Jennings, Keenan Reynolds

With Doug Baldwin retiring, this group is razorthin. Tyler Lockett will bring what he does to the table. Outside of that, it’s all dart throws. DK Metcalf has star potential. He also has bust potential. How do you even describe the rest of the guys on this list? There isn’t an adjective that’s coming to mind. That’s probably not a great sign.

Defensive End: Ziggy Ansah, LJ Collier, Nazair Jones, Rasheem Green, Cassius Marsh

The Seahawks once had a great defense. Cliff Avril racking up sacks had a lot to do with it. Seattle hopes Ziggy Ansah didn’t forget how to play. Ansah can be an elite sack artist… when healthy. We haven’t seen much from Naz Jones or Rasheem Green to warrant any confidence. Cassius Marsh is the guy with all the tattoos that doesn’t do a whole lot else.

Linebacker: Shaquem Griffin, Cody Barton, Mychal Kendricks, Ben Burr-Kirven

Shaquem Griffin is actually listed as the starter. After an 11 tackle season, he’s not going to just get handed the job. Mychal Kendricks has been in the league for a long time. He’s more than capable. Seattle also drafted Ben Burr-Kirven and Cody Barton. Why do they love Pac 12 guys so much? Pete Carroll has to chill with that.

Ready To Breakout: Tyler Lockett

Tyler Lockett is a good deep threat. He has to be way more than that in 2019. His target share is about to go through the roof. Lockett has to become Doug Baldwin and run every route on the tree. It’s make or break time. NO more just getting away with being a kick returner. It’s time to stamp yourself and a true number one option.

Rookie To Watch: LJ Collier

Be Michael Bennett. That’s it. Easier said than done, of course. Collier was drafted in the first round from TCU to hopefully fill that void. Collier is a nasty defender who had a really great Senior Bowl. I didn’t think he was a first round prospect but certainly has some potential. Could be a gem.

Fantasy Sleeper: Rashaad Penny

If we were playing the stock market, all of the stock currently sits on Chris Carson. Rightfully so, the man was a monster last year. Rashaad Penny has zero stock. He wasn’t anything close to a world beater. Let’s just play the odds here. Isn’t there a scenario where Carson gets hurt again and Penny starts to perform up to his first round status? Some guys are slow learners. Penny could have a big year. I don’t know if he will but it’s worth a shot.
