Brian Cashman Is Terrified Of The Boston Red Sox

Nobody loves shooting themselves in the foot quite like Brian Cashman. The Yankees general manager is usually pretty good at his job but he has one kryptonite… his mouth. GM’s usually stay in the background and do their job. Not Cashman. He LOVES creating bulletin board material the opposing team to use. Over the weekend, Cashman was asked about trade talks leading up to the deadline. He had this to say.

“I’m fully engaged with every team,” Cashman said, “except for the Boston Red Sox.”

What a stupid motherf*cker. Interestingly enough, the Yankees are in Fenway Park taking on the Red Sox. In the first 3 games of the series, the Sox beat the living shit out of the Yanks. Boston has scored 38 runs and won all 3 games closing the gap in the AL East. New York had a chance to bury the Sox and put the thought of trade deadline sellers in their heads. Instead, Cashman lit a fire under their ass and the Sox wanted blood. I can’t say I’m surprised. This is what Cashman does. He’s the dumbest smart guy in sports.

This isn’t the first time that Cashman said something stupid. Just a year ago he had the damage quote. Unbelievably dumb. When the Red Sox traded for Chris Sale, he called them the Warriors. Every time he speaks, the Red Sox win. Boston has won the AL East every single year since Cashman called the Red Sox the Warriors. At this point, I don’t understand why you just don’t ban him from speaking to the media. All he does is put his foot in his mouth.

Bill Belichick has paved the way with how you handle the media in sports. The less you talk, the better. Alex Cora has learned first hand what to do playing in the same city as Belichick. Prior to the start of the series, this is what Cora had to say.

Now Cora said more than Belichick did but the tone was still the same. Always compliment the opponent. Say they are the best at something or say they do something very well. Doesn’t matter who it is. That’s what Belichick would do. Cashman doesn’t see it that way. He’s really good at saying the wrong thing.

Cashman is a really smart GM. He’s made a ton of great moves. He also doesn’t know when to shut up. Just within this year, he lost leverage in the Sonny Gray trade, called Patrick Corbin the best starting pitcher on the market after they failed to sign him, and admitted he got outbid on Dallas Keuchel. With all the struggles the Yankees starting pitching has faced this year, you would think Cashman would shut up and get to work. He does the opposite. Instead, he leaks things to the media. He won’t trade Clint Frazier for a rental. He won’t consider trading Deivi Garcia. He wants you to know that the price of the player he wants is unreasonable. Instead, he wants you to just hand them over for free and continue to leak to the media why he’s right.

Brian Cashman is more terrified of the Boston Red Sox than I am of Lorena Bobbit. Nobody owns more space in Cashman’s head than the Red Sox. Cashman is totally rattled by Dave Dombrowski. Dombrowski doesn’t always make the right trade. However, you can’t criticize Dombrowski for being aggressive and going for it. The bogeyman is coming. Cashman knows it. The Sox are one reliever away from the World Series being back on. There’s nobody he wants to see less in a playoff series.
