Sean Payton views NFL’s gambling policy as ‘shameful’
The NFL is an interesting league. These past two years, the NFL has been cracking down on gambling, but now they have implemented their own NFL-themed slot machines at casinos across the nation. The decision is confusing, but now Broncos head coach Sean Payton views the gambling policy as “shameful.”
“When you have a bunch of players getting D’s, you have to start looking at the message,” Payton told USA TODAY Sports’ Jarrett Bell on Tuesday. “And we’ve had a lot of D’s in our league this year with this policy.”
Payton has been the talk of the town recently, making national headlines during NFL training camp. Payton not only torched one NFL coach, but two. The recently hired Broncos coach torched former Broncos coach Nathaniel Hackett. Payton then took a shot at New York Jets coach Robert Saleh, saying the Jets would suck this season.
Now, Payton has moved on from taking shots at other coaches and shifted his focus elsewhere. The 59-year-old doesn’t agree with the harshness of the league’s gambling policy.
“You can’t bet on NFL football, ever, ever, ever,” Payton told his team, per USA TODAY Sports. “I don’t give a (expletive) what it is. The other thing is, it’s the same as the gun policy. You can’t bet on nothing if you’re at your facility, your hotel, your airplane. So, wherever you can’t carry a gun, you can’t place a bet.”
“I know this: There’s a handful of owners that are owning these ‘problems,’” Payton said. “A player can’t have a share of DraftKings or FanDuel. It’s shameful. Embarrassing.”
