Sean McVay Says Matt Stafford Is ‘Even Better Than Advertised’

Sean McVay is evidently more than happy with his new quarterback, Matt Stafford.

One would hope for that to be the case, considering the fact that the Rams not only sent their own starting quarterback to the Lions in exchange for Stafford but also two additional first-round picks. Nevertheless, Stafford was apparently worth the capital, as McVay had this to say about his new signal-caller:

“Bro, this dude’s a bad MF-er,” McVay said of Stafford. “Whatever people say about him, as good as it can be, he’s even better than advertised. It makes sense to him. The guy’s ability to see the game, his ability to draw on his experiences, the feel that he has, it’s pretty special and unique. And man, his feel for people, his authentic way of connecting with his teammates, his coaches, this guy, it’s great being around him.”

Is anyone surprised? I have long believed that Stafford is potentially the most underrated player in the league. Despite playing on the Detroit Lions his entire career, a team that has been terribly run since before I was alive, Stafford has been able to maintain his status as an elite quarterback, racking up a whopping 45,109 passing yards and 282 touchdowns since entering the league in 2009. Those numbers are more impressive considering the fact that his career record as a starter is 74-90-1, demonstrating that Stafford has the unique ability to play at a high level even on a bad team.

This situation seems to be a win for every party involved. Many Lions fans were happy when Stafford was traded to the Los Angeles Rams, as the Rams may give Stafford a legitimate opportunity to compete for a championship. Similarly, many Rams fans seemed to believe that Jared Goff held the Rams offense back, as his specific skillset tended to limit McVay’s options at times. In Goff, the Lions received a young quarterback who simply needs to develop, but if he fails to do so, the Lions now have the picks to go in a new direction. The Rams are happy, the Lions are happy, and the fans of both teams appear happy as well.

I cannot wait to see how McVay’s brilliant mind uses Stafford under center, as he and Goff are not at all comparable in regard to arm talent. Stafford throws like he could hit a dime off of a spider’s back from 65 yards, but Goff has struggled with even routine throws.

The sky is truly the limit for the Rams and their new quarterback, Matt Stafford.
