Coming into the 2019 NFL Draft, I thought DK Metcalf was a true boom or bust pick. He could be the best receiver in the draft or be an outright bust. Metcalf slipped to the third round and automatically became a gamble worth taking. Thus far, Metcalf sure as hell is the best rookie receiver. The former Ole Miss receiver has 29 catches for 525 yards and five touchdowns so far this season.
Pete Carroll thinks Metcalf is ahead of the rookie curve:
“He’s not typical. He’s atypical,” Carroll said. “He’s well ahead of the curve, in his smarts and awareness and savvy. You saw it. I’m glad you pointed it out. That’s the guy that we have on our team. He’s going to have a big year.”
Seattle deserves credit for developing Metcalf, to begin with. They took his skillset and are getting the most out of his. He can run slants and 9 routes all day and be productive and this offense. It also helps to have Russell Wilson under center with a proven quarterback that can get the ball out on time and in rhythm. I think Seattle knew pretty early on they were getting a star.
It will be interesting to see how the targets get distributed moving forward. Josh Gordon is coming. That’s another body to feed until he decides to light up another bowl. Nevertheless, Metcalf looks like a star. The Seahawks stole DK Metcalf. Give general manager John Schneider a lot of credit. He rebuilt this roster faster than I ever imagined. He’s done a hell of a job to get Seattle to 7-2 to this point in the season.
