The Seahawks need a change at Defensive Coordinator

Seahawks Defensive Coordinator
Could we see a reuninon with Dan Quinn and the Seahawks? (BY GREGG BELL/THE NEWS TRIBUNE)

What was once one of the league’s best defenses, the Seattle Seahawks defense has turned into one of the worst, and it’s time for a change. Could we see a reunion with an old friend?

There was only one positive from the Seahawks today and that was that the pass rush, which has been historically bad this season, looked good with Carlos Dunlap in the mix. But, with a change at Defensive Coordinator, only one name comes to mind.

So how bad is Ken Norton’s defense?

This season the Seahawks have given up the second most amount of yards in the NFL this season. They have given up the most yards per game. The Hawks defense ranks last in passing yards, and in passing yards per game. Although, surprisingly the Seahawks have the 6th best defense when it comes to rush defense.

And if the Seahawks plan to make win the superbowl this year then they need to make a change on defense.

Now, yes they have had some injuries on defense.

List of injured players:

  • Defensive Back Ugo Amadi
  • Pro-Bowl Corner Back Shaquill Griffin
  • Defensive End Benson Mayowa
  • Cornerback Neiko Thorpe
  • Defensive End/ Outside Linebacker Bruce Irvin
  • Safety Marquese Blair
  • Defensive End Branden Jackson

Although there are some good players on that list, they still have their core on defense and they got back Jamal Adams and added Dunlap on November 8th.

If the Seahawks want to win the Super Bowl and give their Quarterback a legitimate shot at winning MVP, they need to sure up their defense. That’s got to start with a new Defensive Coordinator.

Who should they bring in?

Dan Quinn

In the Seahawks two best years on defense, they had Dan Quinn leading the defense. In Quinn’s first season as defensive coordinator (2013), the Seahawks led the league in fewest points allowed, fewest yards allowed, and takeaways with 231, 4,378, and 39, respectively, to become the first team since the 1985 Chicago Bears to accomplish the feat; the Seahawks went on to win Super Bowl XLVIII over the Denver Broncos. After those two years, Quinn left to become the head coach of the Atlanta Hawks. Although recently he was fired and now is an option for the Hawks. It may take a lot of money to bring him back, but with Carroll, Schneider, and Jody Allen (sister of Paul Allen, who is now the owner of the Hawks after her brothers passing) all on board to win another Super Bowl. They need to spend that money to get better.

Whether they bring him back now or at the end of the season this is a move the Seahawks need to aggressively make. Although with that being said I think Pete Carroll and John Schneider have a tight leash on him and may give him a couple of weeks due to the injuries.
