The fact that Sam Darnold is making an appearance in the Super Bowl is absurd already, seeing that he has basically flamed out since being drafted third overall in the 2018 NFL Draft. He will be on the sidelines for the 49ers as they take on the Kansas City Chiefs this Sunday, but if you asked Darnold, he would tell you he thought he would’ve already been there.
During the media event Monday night, Darnold spoke to reporters about how this is not how he envisioned him making his first Super Bowl appearance would be.

“I always envisioned going deep in the playoffs with New York and being able to make a run at the Super Bowl,” Darnold said, via Brian Costello of the New York Post. “Obviously, that’s what you dream of as a kid. Right when I got drafted by the Jets, and still to this day it’s my goal to be able to bring a championship somewhere. At the same time, you kind of understand what it takes, even in the backup role like I am right now you understand what it takes to actually make it here and actually get it done and not just dream of it and envision it. It’s a lot of hard work, a lot of sacrifice.”
Sam Darnold will never be the guy to lead a team to this place. However, he does have a chance to become a Super Bowl champion this weekend, something no one can ever take away from him. San Francisco is his third team in six seasons, but maybe he has found a home with the 49ers. Hey, winning a ring is pretty rad regardless of your situation.
