Jose Altuve and the Houston Astros agree to a five-year worth $125 million deal, the team announced on social media.
Jon Heyman of the NY Post confirms that the deal is worth $125 million.
Heyman mentioned that Jose Altuve is the first 2B to reach $300 million in career earnings. Heyman broke down the annual value of Altuves’ new deal: $30M, $30M, $30M, $25M, $10M.
The deal will see the longtime Astro Altuve remain with the team until 2029. Altuve has expressed his desire to play into his 40s and the contract agreement helps further that goal.
“I’m 32, and I want to play to 40,” Jose Altuve told the Houston Chronicle’s Chandler Rome: “I love what I’m doing right now. I love my game. I enjoy my game, … When I go out there and put my uniform on, I really enjoy playing with these guys. Hopefully, like Craig said, I can stay here for the rest of my career. Everybody knows it’s not up to me. But (it’s) something I would love to (do).”
Jose Altuve, 33, started his career with the Astros in 2011, and now seems very likely that he will end his career with the team with his latest contract extension.
During his time in Houston, Jose Altuve won the 2017 and 2022 World Series, became an eight-time All-Star, 2017 AL MVP, and many more accolades for the Venezuelan.
The Astros continue making moves before the beginning of Spring Training in a few weeks, which included the signing of Josh Hader earlier this offseason. Jose Altuve and the Houston Astros will kick off their Spring Training against the St. Louis Cardinals on Feb. 24th.
