Sean Payton has been rumored to leave the Saints for what seems like forever. Not so fast! New Orleans is locking their coach down. Payton will sign a 5-year extension to stay with the Saints. The franchise has rewarded the only coach to ever win a championship with a new payday. Payton’s deal was set to expire in 2020 but isn’t going anywhere now.
Jay Glazer of Fox Sports first reported the news:
Payton led the Saints to their only championship in 2010. That win came against the Payton Manning Colts. Payton’s decision to go with a ballsy onside kick may have been the gutsiest call ever in a Super Bowl and probably directly led to a championship.
Sean Payton is a very good coach. He’s one of the best offensive coaches in the sport. Payton has a career record of 119-74. A lot of those came with bad defenses. Payton could have won the Super Bowl in back to back years but the Saints season ended in heartbreak.
Sean Payton is a really great coach. He is the last true Bill Parcells disciple. Payton spent time as Parcells’ offensive coordinator in Dallas during the 2003-2005 seasons. Payton helped Tony Romo’s career tremendously.
New Orleans finds themselves in a tricky spot. How many years does Drew Brees have left? Is Teddy Bridgewater the answer? When will Taysom Hill get his chance? It is a tricky situation to watch moving forward. Given the fact that Brees is a folk hero in the city of New Orleans, you would have to think the Saints will give Brees a chance to retire in their uniform.
