Is Saddiq Bey The Best Trade Target For The Celtics?

$6.2 million. It should be the only thing that Celtics fans care about heading into the 2024 NBA Trade Deadline. Because Brad Stevens mismanaged the Grant Williams contract (who should have just been re-signed and this season is only further proving that) Boston’s best trade chip at the deadline is the $6.2 million trade exception. An exception that will expire in the offseason if the C’s don’t use it prior to the deadline. That brings us to Saddiq Bey.

It’s hard to find a player worth trading for at that price tag. One that is available and won’t cost an arm and a leg. Every possible bench piece that would probably help Boston is more expensive than that. They can’t get go sign Gordon Hayward if he’s bought out because of the trash bag new rules.

It’s all about upgrading the bench. The top six is locked and loaded. Sam Hauser and Payton Pritchard have also turned into positive contributors. Luke Kornet and Neemias Queta have actually done a nice job as backup bigs. The most logical target for the Celtics is probably another wing. Boston doesn’t have enough wing depth behind Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.

When you combine it all together, Bey just feels like the most logical target. The former Villanova product is shooting the ball like garbage cashing in on a career-worst 31.2% from three. In fairness, it’s not exactly easy to play with one of the biggest cancers in the league in Trae Young. It’s go stand in the corner and hope you get a clean look in the corner.

Bey, 24, is averaging 12.6 points, 6.4 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and one steal per game across 32.5 minutes per game in 42 contests. In Boston, his minutes would go way down but maybe the efficiency would climb. As an off-the-bench wing that can defend and hit shots, Bey could be the perfect fit for this bench unit.

It’s not exactly a sexy group of names the Celtics can target at the deadline. Bey just feels like the best possible addition. Other names to consider are John Konchar, Xavier Tillman, and Naji Marshall. It is what it is. Boston just has to find a way to make the most of it to ensure Banner 18 gets hung up this year.
