De’Aaron Fox rejected a three-year extension with the Sacramento Kings last offseason, positioning himself for an even payday next summer–especially if he makes an All-NBA this summer.
It was previously speculated that the San Antonio Spurs would be the team “positioning itself” to target the tantalizing 27-year-old point guard, should the Kings decide to explore a trade. Well, ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania dropped a bombshell Tuesday, roughly one week from the Feb. 6 trade deadline: The Kings would be opening up trade guards for Fox, who’s in the penultimate year of a five-year, $163 million extension he signed ahead of the 2020-21 season.
Charania noted that there will be “plenty of suitors,” but went as far as to claim that there’s “a target destination in mind ahead of 2026 free agency.” Is that San Antonio? According to Kings insider James Ham of The Kings Beat, the stars align.
“According to multiple sources, if De’Aaron Fox leaves the Kings via trade, his preferred landing spot is the San Antonio Spurs,” Ham tweeted Tuesday afternoon. “It could be an interesting couple of days in Sacramento.”
Outside of him being from Katy, Texas, (~3:00 East of SA), it’s hard to fault him, if that’s the case.
While the Spurs are still 2.5 games back of Sacramento in the play-in race, they are on the rise with 7-foot-5 superstar Victor Wembanyama. Obviously, not all the ingredients are in place, but they have an exciting young core around him in Devin Vassell, Jeremy Sochan and Stephon Castle, the No. 4 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft. That’s not to mention Julian Champagnie, who burst onto the scene this year, or Keldon Johnson, among others.
San Antonio would likely have to part with at least a couple of those aforementioned pieces. They have the salaries to money-match–plus plenty of tradable draft capital–to get a deal done, hypothetically.
We also don’t know what the Kings would prioritize, especially if there’s a bidding war affront. The price will already be large in terms of young talent and draft capital, but it has the potential to be greater if multiple teams are on the phones with Sacramento offering its entire treasure chest. Each team has to establish a budget/line of which they will cross–what if it’s beyond San Antonio’s line?
Anywho, deadlines create urgency with positions fighting for leverage, and the deadline is nearly one week away. What we know is Sacramento is listening. Will the Spurs engage? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
