Ryan Fitzpatrick Will Be The Downfall Of The Washington Football Team

Ryan Fitzpatrick will be on his ninth different team to start 2021. The Washington Football Team gave the 17-year NFL vet a one-year contract, and he will open Week 1 as the starter. Fitzpatrick has become the go-to bridge quarterback along with guys like Tyrod Taylor and Teddy Bridgewater. The only problem for the WFT is that they have no future plans at the quarterback position. After whiffing on the Dwayne Haskins pick, the Football Team is running out of options.

I was banging the table for them to trade for Sam Darnold or even Jimmy Garoppolo, but they waited too long or didn’t offer an attractive package. Ultimately the Panthers traded for Darnold, and Jimmy G looks to be the starter for the time being in San Francisco.

Fitzpatrick reminds me of an older version of Jameis Winston. He has the arm and is somewhat mobile, but the accuracy and decision-making have always been in question. Fitzpatrick falls under the “gun-slinger” category of quarterbacks who have talented arms, but sometimes that arm gets them in trouble like Jay Cutler and Drew Lock. While I think Fitzpatrick is better than those guys, he is a very hit or miss depending on the week.

In nine of his seventeen seasons, he has thrown double-digit interceptions, and his career completion percentage sits at 60.7%. Fitzpatrick has never thrown for over 4,000 yards and has never had more than 25 touchdowns in a season. Although he has only played all 16 games three times in his career, he oozes inconsistency.

This team’s defense is good enough to win you a couple of games. Chase Young is a stud, Montez Sweat and Jonathan Allen are nice pieces, and their linebackers are solid. This team does not need a gunslinger at quarterback. They need quite the opposite, actually. They need someone who can manage the game and just not turn the ball over as frequently as Fitzpatrick will.

I think Taylor Heinicke starts at least three games for Washington this year. Heinicke showed the world he belongs in the NFL in the 2020 Playoffs as he gave Tom Brady and the Bucs their closest game on their way to the Super Bowl. I know it is preseason, but two weeks ago in the Patriots vs. WFT game, between the six quarterbacks that played that night, including Fitzpatrick, Cam Newton, and Mac Jones, I thought Heninicke looked the best. He is sneaky mobile, and his arm is fine, so why not give the kid a shot for the starting job?
