Mike McCarthy Will Be Fired Before The 2021 Season Ends

Mike McCarthy had a disastrous first season as head coach of the Cowboys. The Dak Prescott injury pretty much derailed the 2020 season but let’s not forget, the Cowboys were 1-3 in the first four games with Dak. Many people like myself questioned the hire, and McCarthy has yet to proves us wrong. After watching the Cowboys on HBO’s Hard Knocks, I am selling even more stock when it comes to McCarthy. Jerry Jones wants to win, and if McCarthy gets off to a slow start, he is gone.

Let’s not forget when Mike McCarthy lied in order to get the coaching job. He preached analytics and stated he watched every snap of the 2019 season, which we later found out was total bullshit. McCarthy said he told Jerry Jones he watched every snap because he really wanted the job. Fast forward to his opening press conference, and the truth came out that he did not watch every snap, shocker.

Ok, so he didn’t watch every snap of the 2019 season, but he hired a competent defensive coordinator, right? Wrong! McCarthy opted to hire his good friend Mike Nolan from the old days in Green Bay. Nolan would coach one of the worst defenses in the franchises’ history, which included a whopping 473 points allowed. At times last season, a number of players ripped the defensive coaching staff, saying they were unprepared and “just not good at their jobs.” Nolan was rightfully fired after the season, ultimately confirming what everyone thought when McCarthy hired him.

Fast forward to the 2021 season, and McCarthy yet again made another suspect hire at defensive coordinator. He brought in Dan Quinn. Yes, Atlanta’s former head coach who got fired five games into the 2020 season. Not to mention, the Falcons defense under Quinn was horrible. What is Mike McCarthy doing with these hires? Does he want his defense to be bad? The Cowboys do not have the defensive personnel to overcome poor coaching.

If the Cowboys don’t make the playoffs, McCarthy is gone either way, but I truly believe he won’t make it to the end of the season. The first six weeks are going to define the rest of the season: Bucs, Chargers, Eagles, Panthers, Giants, Patriots. Honestly, I see them going 2-4 or 1-5. They’ll beat the Eagles, maybe the Giants, and possibly the Panthers with losses to the Bucs and Chargers. When it comes to the Patriots, if I just said Bill Belichick vs. Mike McCarthy, who are you going with? Let’s not forget the Pats beat the Chargers last year 45-0, and the Chargers roster was ten times better than the Patriots.

It’s also evident the players are out on McCarthy, especially Dak Prescott. There were a number of comments regarding the coaching staff last season, and after watching Hard Knocks, it just seems like the head coach and quarterback are not on the same page. Now Dak is a good enough guy where he won’t publically say it, but he looks visibly frustrated with McCarthy.

Normally, Jerry has shown patience with his head coaches as Jason Garrett was there for nine seasons, but McCarthy is a different story. He has no equity with the team and has made some questionable moves as head coach. I wouldn’t advise firing someone mid-season unless you have a replacement in mind, and the Cowboys have had McCarthy’s replacement in-house for years. Enter Kellen Moore, the former Boise State legend who has served as the offensive coordinator since 2019. He has a familiarity with the offense, and more importantly, Dak Prescott playing for the Cowboys also helps his case.

If McCarthy fizzles out early in the 2021 season, why not fire him and see what you have in Moore? If he comes in as an interim head coach and provides some juice to the locker room, why not give him the full-time gig. The job has also become less appealing over the years despite them being the biggest brand in football. As long as Jerry Jones is alive and well, he will control every aspect of the team. I am not going near that job if I am Lincoln Riley, Matt Campbell, or any other high-level college coach.

Mike McCarthy is getting fired. It now becomes a question of how long he will make it.
