It would appear that Kenny Pickett’s time might be up as the starting Quarterback of the Steelers, as the team has signed Russell Wilson to a one-year, prove-it deal. ESPN’s Adam Schefter first broke the news late this evening. Ian Rapoport is reporting that the value of the contract is for $1.2 million dollars, meaning the Denver Broncos will still be owing Wilson $38 million of his salary.
I can’t lie to you. As a Steelers fan here at Vendetta, when I saw the tweet that Russell Wilson was signing, I was furious. Wilson was the subject of the worst trades in NFL history and played very poorly during his two years in Denver, don’t let the numbers fool you. There is a lot to pick apart and dislike about Wilson’s game.
However, getting Wilson on what is basically a vet minimum deal is great for the Steelers. It brings immediate, legit training camp competition for Kenny Pickett, and if Wilson wins the job, he is a pretty seamless scheme fit for the Arthur Smith offense. He won’t be asked to do too much but hand it off and convert the occasional third and mid to long.
Take a breath, Steelers fans. It could be worse. Russell Wilson going to Pittsburgh for cheap can only bring good things. If Pickett beats out Wilson, it would (hopefully) mean he has progressed and taken that next step fans have been wanting. If Wilson beats Pickett out, he brings veteran experience and leadership to the offense. Plus, if Wilson turns his career around and takes this team’s place, you know you have your guy for the next few years. Mostly all positive things here as this team looks to make a deep playoff run.
