The perception is that Russell Gage was just a depth signing and it shows on fantasy football draft boards. What people might not realize is that Gage is about to explode the first half of the year and is a must draft at his current cost.
Chris Godwin has no timetable on his recovery and is likely to miss a decent chunk at the start of the season. Gronk has not re-signed, and no one knows what he’s doing — probably not even him. Antonio Brown is also in no man’s land. The targets have been vacated for at least the start of the season and besides Mike Evans and Leonard Fournette, there aren’t any other threats to earning them. Enter Russell Gage.
The guy is talented. I know you probably didn’t watch many Falcons games last year but with Ridley out, Gage made some spectacular grabs and was really the top receiving option for Matt Ryan ahead of unicorn Kyle Pitts. In fact, in 10 games without Ridley he was on pace for a 1,000-yard season and was a Top 20 fantasy receiver.
His current cost is peanuts. In snake leagues he’s going in like the 7th or 8th round — that’s crazy to me. In auction drafts, I doubt he costs more than a couple bucks either. If you can get a solid WR2 option for at least the start of the season at a minimal cost, I’m not sure if there’s an easier decision out there. And as the season goes on, he could easily become a viable flex play even with Godwin back by filling in the Antonio Brown role.
Look, don’t just take my word for it, listen to the GOAT. Gage is about to pop off and is under everyone’s radar. Make sure you don’t miss out like the rest.
