The last 24 hours have been full of crazy transfer sagas, but the most interesting of them all may be Cristiano Ronaldo wanting a move to Manchester City. After Harry Kane confirmed that he would be at Tottenham for the remainder of the 2021-22 season, City and Pep Guardiola are still on the hunt for a striker in the waning hours of the transfer window and Ronaldo is interested in a move.
Manchester City was long linked to Kane throughout the summer transfer window, but as the negotiations stalled and restarted for months, the club deserted pursuits of notable strikers including Romelu Lukaku and Erling Haaland, as well as letting club legend Sergio Aguero leave the club on a free transfer to Barcelona. Now it appears that Ronaldo may be their last hope.
According to football insider Fabrizio Romano, Juventus contacted the reigning Premier League champions regarding a potential fee, but City has “no intention” to pay the reported €25 million asking price. The advances in the Ronaldo transfer saga come on the heels of the 36-year-old asking to start on the bench for Juventus’ weekend matchup against Udinese.
There is a belief at Juventus that Ronaldo will stay. However, it certainly appears that the Portuguese superstar is manufacturing a way out of Italy. Manchester City is unwilling to pay the fee, and PSG is reportedly uninterested after there was potentially some initial interest there, so there is no easy option.
While this situation unravels, one can’t help but feel a little pity for Gabriel Jesus. The 23-year-old was signed to be City’s future No. 9, yet all he’s heard this summer is that he is the backup option as City searched for a starting striker. With Ronaldo potentially moving to Manchester City, Jesus would likely be cast aside as the former Manchester United star switches his loyalties.
Ronaldo has one year remaining on his contract with Juventus.
