After an Elite Eight appearance, the Texas Longhorns have promoted Rodney Terry to full-time head coach. Texas named Terry after the dismissal of former Head Coach Chris Beard. Terry’s contract consists of a five-year deal worth $3 million a year, according to Jon Rothstein.
Terry has led his Longhorns to their most successful season in a very long time. Texas started their dominant season after a 29-9 overall regular season record, and 12-6 conference play. Terry and the Longhorns would come into the Big 12 tournament in losing two out of their last three games. Texas would eventually make it all the way to the Big 12 Championship and defeat the Kansas Jayhawks.
Going into the Tournament, the Longhorns and Terry earned themselves a two seeds where they would eventually make it all the way to the Elite Eight. They would eventually lose to Miami in a close bout after a collapse in the last minutes.
Besides the tournament, Terry impressed the Longhorn nation no matter the outcome of March Madness. Terry exemplifies more to the game than just coaching. He shows unbelievable amounts of humbleness and maturity through the season, and even after the loss to Miami.
“Not only have I loved these guys for the time that I’ve gotten a chance to coach them. But I’m gonna love them for the rest of their lives,” said Terry. “I’ll be at their weddings, I’ll be talking to those guys when they have their firstborns. It was all about this team and I enjoyed every single day of this journey with this group.” Via Noah Gross and Texas Press Conference.
Terry would later say that it was never about him, but about the guys on the team. He will be joining a press conference this week that is being held for the announcement of his hiring.
