Robert Griffin III and Michael Vick have made headlines regarding their differing opinions on how Lamar Jackson is dealing with his injury.
The back-and-forth started when Vick said that he played a whole season on a torn MCL, and that Jackson should tough it out and play in the wild-card game against the Bengals.
“Put a brace on it, let’s go,” Vick said. “I played a whole season on a sprained MCL.”

This comment immediately struck a nerve with Griffin, who himself has dealt with a number of knee injuries. He responded indirectly to Vick’s comments with the following tweet.
Jackson hasn’t played since sustaining the PCL injury back on Dec. 4. Although the injury was only supposed to sideline him for a few weeks at worst, it’s clear that the injury is much more severe seeing as he didn’t practice once after sustaining it.
It’s for that reason why I side with RGIII in this case. We don’t know the severity of this injury and Vick especially doesn’t know what is going on with Jackson’s body. I’m sure Vick did play a season on a sprained MCL and that’s good for him, but it in no way applies to Jackson’s situation.
It’s clear that the Ravens don’t want to pay Jackson either, so why should he risk his health and chance for a huge contract by coming back when he isn’t at 100 percent?
Now, Vick comes from an older generation of football where guys were “tougher” and played through many injuries that routinely sideline guys today. But a part of that has come with the increased knowledge of just how much damage these guys are doing to their bodies. Players are getting faster and stronger and as a result, hits tend to add up a bit quicker than they used to.
Griffin himself knows about the consequences of trying to play through knee injuries. He dealt with a plethora of MCL/ACL sprains and tears which pretty much ruined his playing career after trying to battle through them. He experienced first-hand what it’s like for an athlete’s body to break down, and I think it’s why he had such an issue with Vick’s comments.
RGIII probably sees a lot of himself in Jackson and wants to make sure he avoids the same mistakes he made. I personally think Jackson is making the right decision here. It’s clear that this injury is more severe than were being told and the best plan for his career is to ensure it heals fully.
It’ll be interesting to see how this all affects the Lamar Jackson sweepstakes. In fact, it’s part of the reason why I believe the true nature of the injury hasn’t been revealed yet. Regardless of what it turns out to be, teams will still be chomping at the bit for the former league MVP and the explosiveness he can bring to an offense.
I love Michael Vick as an Eagles fan, but he’s pretty clearly in the wrong here. It just seems like a pretty cheap shot at a guy trying to recover from an injury. But hey Vick is a really tough guy because he played through a sprained MCL, right?
