20-year extension to TD Garden’s name right has been agreed to
The home of the Boston Bruins and Celtics will continue to be known as TD Garden through 2045, according to ESPN.
TD Bank and the building’s owner, Delaware North, extended the contract for naming rights on Jan. 12, 2023. The previous contract was set to expire in 2025.
Before the initial naming of The Boston Garden, the arena had several names, including being called Shawmut Center, better known as the FleetCenter, and the TD Bank North Garden. Ultimately, it is now, of course, known as TD Garden.
Over the years, TD Garden has hosted many memorable moments in sports history.
In 1999, it held the NHL entry draft with center Patrik Stefan being selected first overall by the Atlanta Thrashers — a truly amazing organization to go to. It has also seen raising of numerous NHL and NBA players’ numbers into the rafters, including Ray Bourque, Cam “Salt Shaker” Neely, Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce, the man who had a serious bathroom break in the NBA Finals.
The Bruins and Celtics have been accustomed to winning in Boston with 23 combined championships — six Stanley Cup victories for the Bruins and 17 NBA championships for the Celtics.
The most recent Stanley Cup victory for the Bruins was in 2011, when they beat the Vancouver Canucks in a controversial fashion. The Celtics hoisted their latest Larry O’Brien trophy in 2008 when they defeated the Los Angeles Lakers in six games with the help from the “Big 3” of Garnett, Pierce and Ray Allen.
With TD Garden staying the home for the Bruins and Celtics, we will likely see more banners risen in the near future — including possibly two this year.
