Robbie Gould Retires After 18 Seasons

Veteran kicker Robbie Gould has made the decision to retire from the NFL after 18 accomplished seasons, he announced on social media Thursday.

Earlier this year, the 49ers decided not to resign the 40-year-old kicker. Instead, they opted to go with rookie Jake Moody, who has converted on 17-of-20 field-goal attempts and 43-of-43 on extra points this season.

Gould expressed interest in playing a 19th NFL season, and he auditioned for the Giants last month. The longtime Bears and 49ers kicker will instead opt to leave the game behind.

The former undrafted kicker made his NFL debut on the Chicago Bears in 2005, going 21-for-27 on field goals and 19-for-20 on extra points. Gould spent 11 years in Chicago and made a record 276-of-323 (85.4%) field goals. He also holds franchise records in career scoring, field goals made in a season and field goals of at least 50 yards. He’s also their franchise leader in scoring with 1,207 points.

Gould never dipped below 95 percent in Chicago’s extra points and also set his career-long 58-yard field goal there in 2013. He then spent one year on the Giants before signing with the 49ers in 2017. He ranks first in 49ers’ history in field goal parcentage and his 161 field goals rank second in team history behind Ray Wersching.

His 21 playoff field goals with the 49ers are the most in their franchise history. He made 161 of 184 field-goal attempts and 221-of-230 point-after kicks the past six seasons.

Gould retires after never missing a postseason kick in his NFL career, making 29-of-29 field goal attempts and never missing an extra point. His 86.46 percent career make rate ranks ninth in NFL history. Gould leaves a one-time All-Pro honoree and Pro Bowler.
