The Luka Doncic-Anthony Davis trade was truly a “where were you at when this happened?” moment. Some of you may have been already asleep, some of you were maybe hanging out with friends or at a club and others like myself just got done eating a very late dinner, scrolling social media like the rest of us nowadays.
Once the trade broke, fans, pundits and players reacted appropriately on social media and other mediums. Half of us thought it was fake or that ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania got hacked while others were trying to process what they were reading like we were in elementary school.
Well, initially, when the idea was proposed to Los Angeles Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka over a month ago, he thought Dallas Mavericks executive Nico Harrison was joking, according to Brad Townsend of The Dallas Morning News.
“Harrison told The News he and Pelinka began having ‘basketball’ conversations more than a month ago.
Then all of a sudden we’re like, ‘Would you ever do this?’
‘Nah, you’re joking, right?’
‘Hmm. Interesting. Maybe I would.’
Added Harrison: ‘And then it just built over time over the last three weeks.’
A person familiar with the Mavericks-Lakers negotiations told The News that Harrison got full support from team governor Patrick Dumont in the weeks leading to the trade and when it was time to pull the trigger late Saturday night.”
Pelinka wasn’t alone; all of us thought Charania, the messenger, was joking too. Heck, Charania revealed Monday that he thought his text messages were hacked.
That’s how seismic this deal was, and Harrison still pulled the trigger anyway without telling his head coach, the player’s agent or the player himself for a month that something like this was a possibility. Harrison did a remarkable job keeping this under-the-rug, but that was perhaps the only good thing from this deal–even though Anthony Davis is an All-NBA talent and one of the best defenders on planet Earth.
The Mavericks general manager later revealed that he only talked with Pelinka and none of the 28 other teams about Doncic’s market, which is malpractice. It’s also very shortsighted, which is what more front offices across sports are than not.
We will see with time whether or not we will all have egg on our face, but Doncic is a 25-year-old superstar is now joining one of the premier franchises in sports.
