We know the Golden State Warriors are star-hunting to pair someone next to Stephen Curry. As of Monday, 72 hours before the 3 p.m. EST deadline on Feb. 6, they are checking in with “every All-Star player,” according to ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania, leaving no stone unturned.
Though the Warriors could be serious about pursuing a reunion with one familiar face who helped the franchise to two NBA Titles during their dynasty run: Kevin Durant.
This comes on the heels of a report Monday from NBA insider Jake Fischer of The Stein Line that the Warriors were exploring deals for Durant.
“That would require quite the masterstroke,” Fischer wrote. “And while pulling that off currently stands as very unlikely, both from a salary-matching and asset valuation standpoint, this is the sort of big-game hunting that has defined these Warriors.”
Fischer also noted that the Phoenix Suns do not plan on trading Durant before the deadline, though this information is always fluid–especially in the hours leading up when there’s urgency from every angle.
“Phoenix, entering Monday’s business, continued to signal that it does not plan to move Durant before the deadline, sources said, but the Suns are believed to be listening at the very least to various teams’ pitches for the 35-year-old scoring legend,” the report read. “Durant, meanwhile, is said to be aware of all this.
“The Suns, mind you, are expected to maintain a very high asking price before they ever agreed to part ways with him. We’re talking serious draft capital and highly rated young talent.”
The Warriors and Suns have both been in the Jimmy Butler sweepstakes, with Butler keen on joining the latter because of the impending extension that will come his way. ESPN NBA insider Brian Windhorst reported Sunday night that the talks between Miami and Golden State have cooled off “for now,” though Anthony Slater of The Athletic indicated Wednesday that they are not out of the Butler sweepstakes.
“There are still three days until the trade deadline, an eternity in this transaction window,” Slater wrote. “The Warriors believe they are still firmly in the mix for Butler or another of the league’s star dominos that could topple as part of the Butler transaction or once it is resolved, team sources said.”
It’s one big fluid situation. If Durant is really antsy to escape Phoenix’s purgatory, then him reuniting with Curry for one last ride would be objectively awesome for basketball. Depending on what other moves are made and what the transaction looks like, I don’t think Golden State’s ceiling would be super high given how stacked the West is.
But you’d be watching two basketball greats go to-to-toe with Luka Doncic and LeBron James with the Lakers (how weird is it to say that?), Nikola Jokic and the Nuggets and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the Thunder.
