It’s music to the ears of pretty much every baseball fan. Rob Manfred has come out and said he has no desire to serve another term as MLB Commissioner. With his current term running until January of 2029.
“You can only have so much fun in one lifetime, I have been open with them (the owners) about the fact that this is going to be my last term.”
Evan Drellich of The Athletic
At 65 years old, Manfred has been the MLB’s commissioner since taking over for Bud Selig in 2014. In those ten years, Manfred has fostered a lot of hate from fans but was always beloved by owners. Not really a big coincidence there now, is there?
Manfred’s tenure included significant rule changes, the expanded playoff, the 2020 pandemic/lockout season, and the Astros sign stealing scandal, with the Athletics fiasco in trying to move to Vegas being the most recent inclusion.
The rule changes annoyed a lot of the traditional baseball fans. While his overall lax position regarding the Astros sign stealing scandal, calling the World Series trophy a “piece of metal” really just made all baseball fans mad.
The fact that no player on that team was ever significantly punished is still a disgrace. Then you have the gaw to come out a call the trophy a piece of metal? How out of touch can you actually be?
But that’s always just been the issue with Rob Manfred, hasn’t it? He has just always been out of touch with what fans really want. Instead of cowering to the needs and wants of all the owners.
It’s why all the owners loved him. They could walk all over him and get him to do whatever they wanted or needed. Knowing that Manfred would be the eventual scapegoat. He has always been a man lacking conviction, and you just can’t have someone like that running your sport.
It hasn’t all been terrible, with Baseball currently in a better spot than it’s been for a while. But I can’t really credit Manfred for that too much when he’s part of the reason it became such a problem in the first place.
Hopefully, 2029 spells the end for Rob Manfred. I honestly think even that is giving him too much time, but I’ll take what I can get for now. Goodbye Rob Manfred. You won’t missed.
