It’s the dumbest thing in the world that MLB teams can’t trade draft picks. Sorry, that’s a lie. As of right now, teams can only trade competitive balance picks. If you didn’t know that, don’t feel bad. Dummy Colin Cowherd doesn’t know the rules either. Luckily, it sounds like the worst commissioner in pro sports, Rob Manfred, is on the verge of trying to get this asanine rule changed.
Per J.J. Cooper of Baseball America:
“The positions the clubs have taken over time in terms of what they want us to do at the table has been a product of a balance between flexibility in terms of utilizing the resources available to you on the one hand and paternalism on the other—that is I’m going to prevent you from doing acts because I think it would be stupid,” Manfred said. “I don’t think we have that many stupid clubs. We’ll see how it shakes out. We will go through our (collective) bargaining prep,” he continued. “The clubs are really sophisticated now. I do think that there’s a really good argument for allowing them to decide how to use their resources.”
Let me break this down for you real quick. The reason why teams can’t trade picks right now is because each team has designated pool money set aside in terms of getting each pick signed. If the picks get traded, the pool money gets confusing. I just think there is a super easy solution. Take the politics out of it and just scale the picks like the NBA does. Easy enough…
This rule change should have been implemented 50 years ago. It’s insane it’s taken this long to get momentum for this change going.
