Rex Burkhead To Retire After 10 Seasons In NFL

Former Super Bowl 53 winner Rex Burkhead has announced his decision to retire from the NFL on social media.

“I’ve been blessed to be able to play the game of football for 26 years and looking back there are many people I would like to thank,” Burkhead wrote in a statement.

The former running back won Super Bowl 53 with the New England Patriots, which saw New England defeat the Los Angeles Rams, 13-3.

Burkhead, who is retiring at the age of 33, played 4 years of collegiate football at the University of Nebraska, registering over 3300 rushing yards and 35 touchdowns through the ground and air.

Rex Burkhead was drafted in the 2013 NFL draft by the Cincinnati Bengals with the 190th overall pick and spent the next 4 seasons with the team – only playing 1 game his rookie season, due to an injury.

Burkhead had a total of 275 rushing yards for the Bengals, along with 3 rushing TDs in his first 4 seasons in the league.

Signing with the New England Patriots in 2017, Rex Burkhead would find a role in the Patriots squad. During his time in Foxborough, Burkhead would have the best seasons of his career, and be a catching specialist out of the backfield for New England.

In the 2018-19 playoffs, Burkhead had 3 TDs in the Patriots playoff run to the Super Bowl against the Rams.

Rex Burkhead would spend the final two seasons of his career with the Houston Texans, where he would have his best single-season rushing season as a professional. Burkhead would rush for 427 yards in the 2021-22 season.

In the 2022-23 season, Burkhead would not get much playing time despite playing in every game of the season.

Neither the Bengals, Patriots, or the Texans have released a statement on the retirement of Rex Burkhead.
