The Boston Celtics are NBA Champions. They have finally lifted Banner 18. Landing Kristaps Porziņģis turned this team from good to great. The big fella wasn’t always on the floor because of lingering injuries, but his impact was undeniable. Now is as good of a time as ever to revisit the infamous trade that landed Porzingod in Boston.
This is a complicated trade to talk about because there were two iterations of the trade. The first version of the trade was a no-brainer for the Celtics. The second version required Boston to give up folk hero Marcus Smart. The positive of the second version is it somehow gave the Celtics extra draft ammunition that was later used in the Jrue Holiday trade (another story for another day that will be published promptly after this one).
It was hard to be fully on board with the trade that Stevens did eventually pull off. Mostly because Malcolm Brogdon was incredibly disgruntled and all of the defensive grit left the team with Smart. Even after adding Porzingis, it felt like a lateral move until the Holiday piece came in and put them over the top.
^^^ It turns out they got the miracle trade with Jrue falling in their laps. Let’s not forget how lucky the Celtics got with that whole situation to really put this team over the top.
Porzingis got hurt again but it was expected. We knew that was going to happen at some point. What’s important is what he gives Boston makes them a super team. He’s the X-Factor that truly pushes them over the top. The spacing, the rim protection, just overall length, etc.
Tingus Pingus is the perfect third dude for this team and he’s willing to die for this team. Boston fans absolutely love him and it’s a WWE environment every time he’s out there. Thank you for making this possible. It’s been as fun of a season that you can possibly hope for.
