Report: 49ers are shopping Brandon Aiyuk, Deebo Samuel to move into top-10 of 2024 NFL Draft
While no deal has been made official, the San Francisco 49ers have had conversations about trading Deebo Samuel or Brandon Aiyuk to potentially move into the top-10, according to NFL insider Dianna Russini of The Athletic.
Aiyuk, who turned 26-years-old on March 17, has been the hotbed of trade rumors this offseason. He is entering the fifth-and-final year of his rookie contract with a 2024 cap hit of $14.1 million. There has been smoke about him reportedly requesting a trade–even though his agent vehemently denies it–when talks of a possible extension have come to an impasse.
Recall that Samuel, one of the best receivers in the sport, previously requested a trade in 2022 before signing a three-year, $71.6 million extension; he owns a $28.6 million cap hit for the 2024 season. He was one of their biggest X-Factors last year and a big reason why they advanced to their second Super Bowl in five years.
The 28-year-old caught 60 passes for 892 years and seven touchdowns, but added 37 carries for 225 yards and five scores on the ground. For his career, the one-time All-Pro’s recorded 5,129 yards from scrimmage with 38 total touchdowns. Even though his body has occasionally been his worst enemy with his health, he’s one of the NFL’s most dynamic players.
There’s a lot of smokescreen in the weeks, days and even hours leading up to the NFL Draft every year. So perhaps take all this with a grain of salt. Teams have conversations all the time–most amount to nothing.
But info getting leaked mere hours before the draft is fascinating. The 49ers own the No. 31 pick, and multiple teams in the top-10 need receivers with this being a very good receiver class. But could the Bears–with Caleb Williams (presumably)–be looking to trade out of No. 9 for a wideout? Could the Chargers or Titans–picks No. 5 or 7, respectively–be a team looking to add Aiyuk or Samuel to be their new top guy? What about the Giants at No. 6, if Drake Maye doesn’t fall to them?
Within the next several hours, plenty of these questions will be answered, but it makes you all the more curious who will be the team willing to trade back–and who the 49ers are looking to target, should they leapfrog into top-10 territory.
