Earlier this month, the ownership dispute between current majority owner Glen Taylor and buyers Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez was settled, with Lore and Rodriguez winning the case.
The NBA Board of Governors still has to vote on whether or not Rodriguez and Lore will be granted ownership–where it needs at least 23 of the 30 votes. There’s no guarantee that will be the case, but assuming it is, former Timberwolves big man Kevin Garnett is expected to join the team’s front office, according to Charley Walters of The St. Paul Pioneer Press (subscription required).
At this point, we know that Garnett and Taylor don’t have a good relationship, so there was no way he was going to join the front office with him still in charge.
There’s no telling what role that Garnett will have with the organization. But one could expect his voice to hold legitimate weight.
Garnett, 48, averaged 19.8 points, 11.0 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.6 blocks in 14 seasons with the Minnesota Timberwolves (1995-2007; 2015-16). The former No. 5 overall pick made 11 All-Star teams, eight All-NBA teams and eight All-Defensive teams with Minnesota, heralded as one of the best two-way big men in the entire NBA.
The hyper-competitive 6-foot-11 Hall of Famer is still awaiting No. 21 to hang in the rafters in Minnesota. Only Malik Sealy‘s No. 2 hangs in the rafters, as well as a personalized Flip Saunders jersey after the longtime Timberwolves head coach passed away at 60-years-old in 2015.
Under Lore and Rodriguez, one could assume that his jersey retirement will be granted–which would be incredibly well-deserved for arguably the greatest player in franchise history. They have been a dysfunctional organization for years, so I’m curious to see how this transition plays out between the parties.
